Project Update: Windmill Restoration

Our team undertook an extensive restoration project on a local windmill, ensuring that all safety measures and operational requirements were met. Our approach prioritized safe working conditions while maintaining the structural integrity of the site.

Scope of Work Completed

  1. Supply of Scaffold, Ladders, and Plant
We provided scaffolding, ladders, and necessary equipment to facilitate safe working conditions. This was critical to ensure that our team could perform tasks efficiently without compromising safety.

  2. Erection of Scaffolding
We erected scaffolding around the windmill, allowing our team safe access to the areas requiring painting and decorating, including essential roof works. This step was pivotal in the overall restoration process.

  3. Stripping Existing Shiplap
The existing shiplap was carefully stripped from the nacelle and set aside for potential reuse. Our goal was to minimize waste while preserving as much of the original material as possible.

  4. Supply and Installation of New Tongue and Groove
New tongue and groove boards, cut to size, were supplied and installed as needed onto the rafters. This ensured that the roof's structural integrity was maintained while updating its appearance.

  5. Installation of Tyvek Supro Breathable Felt
A new layer of Tyvek Supro breathable felt was laid to complete the nacelle. This material offers excellent protection against the elements while allowing moisture to escape, thus enhancing the windmill's longevity.

  6. Re-laying and Fixing Shiplap
The re-laid shiplap was fixed securely, with existing materials changed over where necessary. The client supplied additional materials as required to complete this stage of the project.

  7. Site Cleanliness
Throughout the project, we maintained a clean and tidy site. All rubbish was removed promptly, and we ensured that the work area was kept organized at all times.

We take pride in our ability to deliver high-quality service while adhering to safety standards and environmental considerations. If you’re considering a project that requires roofing expertise or restoration work, do not hesitate to reach out for a free, no-obligation quotation.

West Chiltington Roof Lining

Felt lining on a roof becomes worn over time, especially the older non breathable membrane (bitumen based.)

At Bespoke Roofing LTD we are able to offer the roofing service for a new breathable membrane to be installed on your property.

You may not be aware but ventilation cannot be installed without having a breathable membrane lining, as this causes condensation in your roof space which can appear as a leak!

I would recommend this service to any client who's roof tiles are in good condition but the felt underneath has become dilapidated and also those who wish to install ventilation within their roof space.

West Chiltington Chimney repairs.

Chimney stacks are one of the main causes for leaks into an internal property.

The following issues are the most common to identify.

  1. Chimney Pointing - Age plays a significant factor in the state of the mortar on your chimney. Once your mortar is a certain age it will begin to crack and allow water into your internal property.

  2. Chimney Rendering - Once again age is a significant factor in the state of the render on your chimney. If the render begins to crack this will allow water to travel and sit between your brickwork, eventually leading to water penetration.

  3. Chimney Flaunching - The chimney flaunching sometimes known as a coping is the top section of mortar that allows your pots to be bedded correctly, but also is laid to a fall allowing water to travel off the top of your stack.

  4. Chimney Pots & Cowls - Chimney pots and cowls can become cracked with age, and driving rain can also cause ingress of water should a chimney cowl not be installed.

  5. Lead Flashings - Lead on average has a life span of 20-30 years dependent on its grade. Over time lead expands and retracts with heat and can begin to crack and malign.

West Chiltington Moss Removal.

Moss, algae and lichen build up can be a big problem for homeowners, not only can it hold water on your roof but also once it falls can block guttering and downpipes preventing free flowing water.

There are a few methods in which we are able to offer in order to remove this from your roof.

The first method is a standard dry scrape - manually removing all moss, algae and lichens from your roof.

The second method is to jet wash and seal.

A manual dry scrape is performed first removing all moss, algae and lichens from your roof.

Once all moss is removed a high powered jet wash is performed with an anti fungal wash to all pitched roofing elevations required.

Once dry we use a high quality roofing sealant to aid in prevention of re-growth and ensure that the roof is 100% clean.

West Chiltington valley repairs/replacements.

There are a few different ways a valley can be installed.

The most common types of valley are tiled valleys, lead valleys and fibreglass valley.

At Bespoke Roofing we are able to offer all of these option but can depend upon the gradient that your valley is positioned.

In most cases we would also change the roof lining a metre either side of the valley so we can be confident that it is completely weathered.

West Chiltington ridge, hip and bonnet repairs.

Ridge, hip, and bonnet tiles are fundamental materials that form the external structure of your roof.

Ridge and hip lines can be formed using either a mortar mix or a dry ridge system, with bonnet tiles being formed using a mortar mix.

The most common method of laying ridge, hips and bonnets is using a mortar mix, which in time can deteriorate through weathering.

This is one of our most common repairs as the mortar begins to age well before the tile itself in most cases.

The ridge, hip and bonnet tiles  can also deteriorate through age and we also offer the service to replace the tile itself depending on its condition.

Another common roofing issue is through storm damage where tiles can be stripped from the roof in high winds, and therefore require replacing - mainly through insurance.

We at Bespoke Roofing offer all types of repairs, from full ridge, bonnet and hip lines to single tile replacements.

History of roofing in West Chiltington

The history of roofing in West Chiltington reflects the area's architectural evolution and the changing materials and techniques used over the centuries. West Chiltington, a village in West Sussex, has roots dating back to the Saxon period, which influences early roofing styles and practices.

In medieval times, the dominant roofing materials were thatch and timber. Thatch, made from straw or reeds, was widely used due to its availability and insulation properties. The traditional timber-frame construction with thatched roofs was emblematic of rural English architecture. These structures provided a cozy environment but were also prone to fire hazards, leading to a shift in roofing practices.

By the 16th and 17th centuries, West Chiltington began to see the introduction of clay tiles and slate as roofing materials. The local landscape provided access to clay deposits, allowing for the production of handmade tiles, which became a popular choice among wealthier households. Slate, sourced from nearby quarries, also gained prominence due to its durability and aesthetic appeal, which contributed to the standardization of building styles in the region.

With the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, advancements in technology led to mass-produced roofing materials. This era saw the introduction of corrugated iron and later asphalt, which offered new alternatives for both residential and commercial buildings. The use of these materials provided a cost-effective and weather-resistant solution, which was particularly important in West Chiltington's varied climate.

Throughout the 20th century, roofing styles continued to evolve. The rise of modern architecture introduced flat roofs, particularly for commercial structures, alongside traditional pitched roofs that remained popular in residential design. The post-war housing boom also led to the use of prefabricated roofing systems, which sped up construction times and reduced costs.

Today, West Chiltington's roofing landscape is a mix of historic charm and modern functionality. Traditional materials like slate and tile are often combined with contemporary techniques, ensuring sustainability and energy efficiency. The village's commitment to preserving its heritage while embracing modern innovations reflects the ongoing evolution of roofing in the area, ensuring that it meets the needs of the community for generations to come.
