A good pitched roof is not judged by tidy tiles alone. The pitch, headlap, fixing pattern, underlay, battens, ventilation, eaves, verges, valleys and leadwork all have to suit the building and the selected material. One poorly resolved junction can undermine an otherwise sound roof.

We work with traditional clay plain tiles, concrete interlocking tiles, natural slate and specified fibre-cement slate, selecting the method after inspecting the existing roof rather than forcing every building into one standard detail.

Method comparison
What changes between tile and slate roofing?
Clay plain tiles are laid as a double-lap covering and require many individual units, careful gauge setting and substantial detailing at verges and junctions. Concrete interlocking tiles cover more area per tile and interlock at their sides, but fixing still depends on the roof pitch, product and exposure.
Slate is laid to a specified headlap and fixing pattern. Natural slate varies in thickness and texture, while fibre-cement slate is more uniform. Neither should be treated as interchangeable with a tile system without checking pitch, loading, battens and junction details.
The manufacturer’s current specification, roof pitch and exposure take priority over generic rules of thumb.

Which is better: clay tiles, concrete tiles or slate?
There is no universal winner. Roof pitch, structural loading, appearance, exposure, planning constraints, budget and the existing building all influence the right choice.
Can you replace the underlay without buying all-new tiles?
Potentially. If the existing tiles remain serviceable and sufficient matching replacements are available, a strip, relining and careful relay may be appropriate. Breakage and condition must be allowed for.
Do modern breathable membranes remove the need for ventilation?
Not automatically. Ventilation requirements depend on the complete roof and insulation design, the membrane specification and current guidance. We assess the build-up rather than relying on the word breathable alone.
Can you repair only one roof slope?
Sometimes, provided the junction with retained work can be detailed properly and the remaining slopes are serviceable. The visual match and condition of shared ridges or valleys also matter.
Do you provide scaffolding?
Yes. We have in-house scaffolding, allowing suitable access to be included and coordinated within the roofing quotation.
What guarantee will I receive?
Qualifying work receives the written guarantee stated in the quotation. Coverage is not identical for every repair or roof system, and transfer to a future owner is not automatic.
