Lead is used at some of the most vulnerable roof junctions: chimneys, valleys, walls, parapets, gutters and dormers. Good leadwork is not simply sheet metal folded over a gap; it is designed around water flow, cover, sheet size, fixings and thermal movement.

Quick answer: lead flashing keeps water out where the roof meets a wall, chimney or other projection. Soakers, aprons, back gutters, saddles and cover flashings each do different jobs; replacing one failed component without understanding the full junction can leave the leak unresolved.

Front apron

Weathering at the downslope face of the chimney.

Soakers

Individual pieces integrated with courses of tile or slate at the sides.

Step / cover flashing

Protects the upper edge of side weathering where the roof meets masonry.

Back gutter

Collects and diverts water arriving on the upslope side of the chimney.

Splits & fatigue

Thermal movement can fatigue lead if sheet sizing, fixing or detailing restricts the movement it needs.

Short cover / poor chase

Wind-driven rain can exploit flashings that do not provide enough cover or are poorly secured into masonry.

Support & falls

Valleys and gutters need appropriate support and drainage; standing water increases the demand on every joint.

Flashings, soakers, valleys and chimneys

Lead is a specialist roofing material. The correct detail depends on roof covering, pitch and geometry.

What is the difference between flashing and a soaker?

A soaker is an individual weathering piece fitted with each course of tiles or slates at an abutment, while cover or stepped flashings protect the top of that junction. Different coverings use different details.

Why does lead flashing split?

Lead moves with temperature. Incorrect sheet sizing, inadequate laps, poor fixing or restriction of movement can contribute to fatigue and splitting.

Can lead flashing be sealed instead of replaced?

Sealant can sometimes have a limited maintenance role, but it should not be used to disguise a failed lead detail that needs proper renewal.

What leadwork does a chimney need?

A chimney on a roof slope typically involves a front apron, side flashings/soakers and a back gutter or saddle arrangement depending on position and covering.

Do lead valleys always need full replacement?

No. Local defects can sometimes be repaired, but widespread splits, poor sizing, corrosion or failed support may justify complete renewal.
