Compatibility first
Liquid roofing is a system, not general-purpose paint
A liquid-applied membrane can follow complex shapes without the numerous cut laps required by sheet materials. That makes it useful around pipes, rooflights, parapets, box gutters and tightly formed junctions. Its apparent simplicity is deceptive: surface preparation, primers, reinforcement, coverage and curing must all suit the substrate and product.
Some systems incorporate fibres within the liquid; others use a separate reinforcing fleece at details or throughout the roof. We describe the actual proposed system in the quotation rather than using liquid rubber as a catch-all term for unrelated products.
The existing roof must be stable enough to receive the system. Wet insulation, rotten decking, contamination, structural movement or a fundamentally poor fall cannot be solved by coating over the surface.

Suitability is confirmed after assessing substrate, moisture, movement, drainage and the selected manufacturer’s requirements.

Reinforced lining to compatible prepared gutters, joints and outlets where dimensions and drainage allow a reliable installation.
Parapets and upstands
Local reinforcement at changes of plane, chases and terminations to keep the waterproofing continuous.
Compatible overlays
Selected stable existing surfaces may be overcoated after preparation and priming, but damp or failed build-ups should not be buried.
Detail repairs
Localised treatment may be possible where the surrounding membrane remains serviceable and product compatibility is established.
Cold-applied working
Useful where avoiding naked flame is important, while still requiring product controls, curing time and safe handling.
Application sequence
Preparation creates the bond; reinforcement manages the details
The finished surface is only as reliable as the bond beneath it. Cleaning may involve removing loose coatings, biological growth, dust, oils and incompatible material. The substrate then needs to be dry enough and primed where the system requires.
Corners, joints, outlets and penetrations are reinforced in the order specified before or during the main application. Coverage rates matter: spreading a product too thinly may leave an attractive colour without the designed membrane thickness.
Curing times and weather limits vary between products. The written quotation identifies the proposed system rather than relying on this generic sequence alone.

Brighton and Worthing properties often contain compact rear roofs, parapets and box gutters where several materials meet. A compatible reinforced liquid system can reduce complicated seam layouts, particularly where flame-free working is preferred. Inland commercial units may benefit at awkward gutter transitions and rooflight kerbs.
Coastal wind does not make liquid roofing automatically better than felt or GRP; edge termination and substrate movement still govern success. We compare realistic options and explain why one system is being proposed.

Liquid roofing FAQs
Is liquid roofing just roof paint?
No. A specified liquid membrane uses compatible preparation, primers and reinforcement at defined coverage rates. Decorative roof paint is not an equivalent waterproofing system.
Can it be applied over felt?
Some systems can bond to suitably prepared stable felt, subject to compatibility and moisture condition. Loose, saturated or badly degraded felt should not simply be buried.
Is liquid roofing completely seamless?
The main coating is continuous, but edges, joints, penetrations and outlets remain designed details that require correct reinforcement and termination.
Can you apply it while the roof is damp?
Most systems require defined dry conditions and substrate moisture limits. Product-specific requirements control whether application can proceed.
Does it repair rotten decking?
No. Defective structural decking must be repaired or replaced before a membrane can provide reliable waterproofing.
What guarantee applies?
Qualifying work receives the written guarantee stated in the quotation. Terms depend on the product, substrate and scope, and transferability must be agreed before work if required.
