Modern felt roofing

A layered membrane, not a single roll of shed felt

High-performance flat-roof felt is built up in compatible layers so laps and details do not rely on one thin sheet. Depending on the selected system and site risk, layers may be bonded using torch-applied, self-adhesive or other approved methods. The correct approach is chosen for the deck, building use and fire-safety constraints.

Felt remains a practical option for extensions, garages, dormers, bay roofs and larger areas because it accommodates a wide range of details and staged working. Its performance depends on deck condition, falls, perimeter treatment, upstand height and drainage as much as the cap-sheet finish.

We inspect for trapped moisture, rotten decking, low upstands and backfalls before preparing a quotation. Covering defects without addressing them may make a roof look new while leaving the original failure underneath.

Felt roofing scope

Details included in a complete renewal

A project may involve some or all of the following, as recorded in the written quotation.

01

Strip and deck inspection

Existing layers removed where specified so the supporting deck and concealed moisture can be assessed.

02

Deck replacement

Decayed or unsuitable boards renewed with a compatible structural deck, fixed and jointed for the selected system.

03

Three-layer membrane

Base layer, reinforced underlay and mineral-finished cap sheet installed as one compatible manufacturer-led build-up.

04

Upstands and outlets

Wall junctions, rooflights, pipes, kerbs and drainage points dressed in the correct sequence and height where achievable.

05

Drips and perimeter details

Edges formed to discharge water clearly away from fascia and masonry rather than letting it track behind the finish.

06

Warm-roof upgrades

Vapour control and rigid insulation incorporated where required and technically suitable, subject to the complete design.

Three-layer sequence

How a felt roof builds redundancy

The layers are bonded and lapped so water has no direct route through the field area. The mineral cap sheet provides the exposed finish, but local details should be reinforced and dressed as the system requires rather than cut around after the main sheet is laid.

A warm-roof design adds vapour control and insulation below the waterproofing zone. It must be designed for the building and current thermal requirements; simply placing insulation between existing joists does not automatically create a warm roof.

Torch-applied products are only used where the substrate, surroundings and risk assessment make that method appropriate.

Suited to many Sussex roofs

A practical system for coastal and inland properties

Worthing and Brighton terraces often have rear extensions, dormers and bay roofs with tight abutments. Inland villages may have larger garages and tree-lined roofs where leaf debris places extra importance on accessible outlets. Felt can accommodate these shapes when the deck and details are properly formed.

Where roof level is low and combustible surfaces are close, the installation method needs particular care. Self-adhesive or cold-applied components may be selected in defined zones when required by the system and risk assessment.

From enquiry to quotation

Remove uncertainty before the new membrane is laid

The survey considers the visible surface and the likely concealed build-up so the quotation can deal with deck repairs and thermal work transparently.

  1. 1
    Survey drainage and details

We inspect outlets, falls, upstands, rooflights, edges and internal signs of leakage or condensation.

  2. 2
    Define strip-off and deck allowance

The quotation states whether existing layers are removed and how concealed deck defects will be handled.

  3. 3
    Install the specified layers

Compatible components are sequenced with local details and fire-safe working methods appropriate to the site.

  4. 4
    Inspect the finished roof

Laps, outlets, upstands and perimeter details are checked, with written guarantee terms supplied for qualifying work.

Questions answered

Felt flat roofing FAQs

Is modern felt better than old shed felt?

Yes. A specified multi-layer roofing system uses reinforced compatible membranes and purpose-made detailing. It should not be compared with a single lightweight DIY roll.

Do you always use a blowtorch?

No. The attachment method depends on the selected system, substrate and site risk. Torch-applied work is only used where it is appropriate and controlled.

Can new felt go over old felt?

Sometimes an overlay may be technically possible, but only when the existing roof is dry, stable and compatible. Strip-off is often preferable where moisture, deck decay or multiple layers are suspected.

What is a warm flat roof?

In a warm roof, insulation is positioned above the structural deck with an appropriate vapour-control layer below it, keeping the deck within the warmer side of the build-up. The complete design must be specified.

Will water always run off completely?

Flat roofs are built to falls, but minor surface water can occur within system tolerances. Significant backfalls or blocked outlets need correcting rather than relying on a new membrane alone.

What guarantee do you provide?

Qualifying work receives the written guarantee stated in the quotation. Terms depend on the specified scope and do not automatically transfer to a later owner.
