System-led installation
GRP succeeds or fails at the deck and details
Glass-reinforced plastic creates a joint-free waterproof surface across the main roof area, but it is not simply grey resin painted onto any deck. The substrate must be sound, dry, correctly fixed and compatible with the chosen system. Trims, corners, outlets, rooflights and wall upstands need reinforcement and sequencing before the main laminate is completed.
GRP can be an excellent choice for many domestic extensions, garages, dormers and balconies that are not intended as occupied terraces. It is less forgiving of movement than some flexible membranes, so structural stability, roof size, movement joints and temperature during installation matter.
We assess whether GRP is suitable rather than offering it as the answer to every flat roof. Where felt or a liquid-applied system better suits the shape, substrate or phasing, we explain the alternative.

What a properly specified fibreglass roof requires
The full system is installed to the relevant manufacturer’s current instructions and the project-specific quotation.
Stable roof deck
A dry, clean and correctly fixed compatible deck. Tongue-and-groove OSB3 is commonly specified, but the final deck follows the selected system.
Purpose-made trims
Drip, raised-edge, wall and expansion details selected for the roof perimeter rather than improvised from resin alone.
Reinforced corners
Internal and external corners, outlets and penetrations laminated carefully before the broad field area.
Resin and glass reinforcement
Glass mat fully consolidated into the resin at the specified coverage, avoiding dry fibres, air pockets and weak overlaps.
Protective topcoat
A compatible topcoat applied at the correct stage and coverage to protect the laminate and create the finished surface.
Falls and drainage
The roof shape and outlets must move rainwater effectively; a new membrane cannot correct every structural backfall by itself.
GRP build-up
From structure to finished topcoat
The waterproof laminate sits above the structural deck. Insulation may be within a separate warm- or cold-roof design, but its position cannot be guessed from the surface finish. Condensation control and thermal requirements must be established for the complete roof build-up.
GRP work is weather-sensitive. Resin, catalyst and topcoat require appropriate dry conditions and temperatures, so installation timing is part of quality control.
This diagram explains the waterproofing sequence, not a universal thermal design. Insulation and vapour control are specified separately where required.
Where GRP is useful
Extensions, garages, dormers and complex edge shapes
GRP is often chosen where a crisp, seamless finish is wanted around rooflights and defined perimeter trims. It can work well on modest domestic roof areas when the supporting deck is sufficiently stable and the details can be completed in suitable weather.
Sussex coastal exposure makes drip edges, wall junctions and outlets particularly important. Inland properties may have tree debris and shaded outlets, so maintainable drainage should be considered at quotation stage rather than after a blockage occurs.

GRP flat roofing FAQs
Is GRP the same as fibreglass roofing?
Yes. GRP means glass-reinforced plastic: a resin-and-glass laminate protected by a compatible topcoat.
Can GRP be installed over an old felt roof?
A sound compatible deck is required. Covering an unknown or damp existing build-up can trap defects, so strip-off and deck inspection are commonly needed.
Can you walk on a GRP roof?
Occasional maintenance access may be possible when the roof and system are designed for it, but an ordinary GRP roof should not be assumed to be an occupied terrace or regular walkway.
Why do some GRP roofs crack?
Movement, unsuitable decking, poor joints, incorrect resin ratios, weak consolidation or inadequate detailing can contribute. Diagnosis should identify the mechanism before repair.
Can GRP be installed in winter?
Installation depends on dry conditions, temperature and the manufacturer’s system requirements. We schedule work around those limits rather than treating all weather as suitable.
How long is the guarantee?
Any guarantee for qualifying GRP work is the written guarantee stated in the quotation. It is not automatically identical across every project or transferable to a later owner.
