Hidden gutter diagnosis, repair and relining
Domestic GRP Box Gutter Lining Across Sussex
Carefully formed fibreglass linings for domestic box gutters, parapet gutters and concealed roof channels where falls, outlets and upstands all have to work together.
Domestic box gutters
Treat the gutter as a complete drainage channel
A domestic box gutter sits between roof slopes, behind a parapet or at an awkward roof junction. Because it is partly concealed, small defects can wet roof timbers and ceilings before water is visible outside. Common causes include cracked or perished lining, short upstands, poor outlet detailing, ponding and movement at changes of direction.
GRP can provide a seamless, joint-reduced lining when the design, substrate and installation conditions are suitable. It is not simply paint. The existing lining is opened up as agreed, the deck and edges are assessed, and the new laminate is formed through corners, upstands and the outlet as one system.
The quotation states what is being removed, whether deck renewal is allowed for and how adjoining tiles, leadwork or roof coverings are treated. Qualifying work receives the written guarantee stated in that quotation; no blanket guarantee applies to every repair or substrate.
Inspection and specification
Problems we assess before specifying GRP
A durable repair depends on correcting the route and management of water, not only covering the most obvious crack.
Split or brittle lining
Age, movement and incompatible past coatings can open cracks at corners, seams and transitions.
Standing water
Insufficient falls or deck movement may leave persistent ponding; the cause should be considered before relining.
Outlet failures
Restricted, undersized or poorly bonded outlets can hold water at the most vulnerable end of the channel.
Short upstands
Wind-driven rain may pass behind a lining that finishes too low beneath adjacent tiles or wall finishes.
Wet or damaged decking
GRP needs a suitable, dry and secure substrate. Hidden deterioration may only become clear after agreed opening-up.
Awkward junctions
Rooflights, parapets, valleys and changes of direction require deliberate detailing rather than improvised patches.
Method explained
A practical box-gutter lining sequence
The surrounding roof covering is lifted only as required to obtain proper upstands and working room. Once the existing build-up is exposed, the deck, falls and outlet can be checked. Any changed scope is explained before extra work proceeds.
GRP installation is weather sensitive. The substrate must be suitable and sufficiently dry, and resins, trims and reinforcement are used to the chosen system's current instructions.
The final method is confirmed after the relevant structure and junctions have been inspected; this diagram explains the decision sequence rather than replacing a site-specific specification.
Local and technical context
Suitable for domestic gutters across Sussex
Concealed gutters occur on period terraces, linked extensions, parapeted roofs and more complex modern homes throughout Sussex. Coastal wind can drive rain high into an abutment, while leaves and moss from inland tree cover can obstruct narrow outlets. Those different conditions influence the inspection and detailing.
Where a simpler localised repair is credible, we will say so. Where the lining, substrate and falls are failing in several places, a continuous renewal is usually easier to specify and inspect than repeated spot patches.
From enquiry to completion
Survey, detail and line the full water path
One team coordinates diagnosis, written scope and access. If opening-up reveals a materially different condition, it is explained before additional work proceeds.
- 1Initial evidence
Send photographs of the gutter, ceilings and outlet if safely obtainable.
- 2Roof-level inspection
Use suitable access to check the channel, junctions and surrounding coverings.
- 3Written specification
Record opening-up, deck assumptions, lining system, access and the qualifying guarantee.
- 4Weather-managed installation
Carry out the work in suitable conditions and document key stages where available.

Questions answered
Frequently asked questions
Can GRP be laid over an old box-gutter lining?
Sometimes an overlay is technically possible, but only when the existing build-up is dry, stable, compatible and properly prepared. We do not assume this without inspection.
Will GRP stop water ponding?
A new lining waterproofs the channel but cannot by itself correct an unsuitable deck fall. Where practical, falls and outlet levels are addressed within the quoted build-up.
Do adjoining roof tiles need to be lifted?
Usually some surrounding covering must be lifted to form adequate upstands and safe terminations. The quotation explains the proposed extent.
Can you repair only one split?
Yes where the remaining lining and substrate are serviceable and a compatible local repair is credible. Widespread brittleness or multiple defects may justify renewal.
Do you provide scaffolding?
Yes. In-house scaffolding can be designed and coordinated for the quoted gutter work.
What guarantee applies?
Qualifying work receives the written guarantee stated in the quotation. It is not identical for every repair and does not automatically transfer to a future owner.
